Black Beans

Oh black beans, how I love you so. Black beans are my staple, my go to food when I'm out of ideas of what to make for dinner. I love them as my chili base, blended in a soup, topped on brown rice with a scoop of salsa. I love them cold, I love them hot. My pantry usually has at least 4 cans on standby.

Talk about healthy, what DOESN'T a black bean have? High in fiber, protein, folic acid, magnesium, potassium, and iron. Low in fat and sodium, and non-existent in cholesterol.

Here's a 1 cup cooked breakdown:

  • 15 grams of protein (that's 30% of your daily value!)
  • 29% of your daily value of iron
  • 10% of your daily value of calcium
  • 0.6 grams of fat
  • 0 mg of cholesterol
  • 801 mg of potassium (that's 22% of your daily value) - helps heart, brain, kidney, and muscle tissue health
  • 15 grams of fiber (60% of your daily value!)
  • 22% magnesium - helps prevent high blood pressure

I will put black beans in almost anything I make (that's how much I love them), but here are a few specific black bean recipes to try out:
